My friend Alice introduced me to the staff at her child's school. The administration was very excited to have me come visit. Before creating the training, I met with the assistant principal to talk about specifications. I asked her if her staff have been through training similar to the topics that I suggested. She looked at me for a while and got quiet. Alice tried to re-explain what I was asking. Then she looked at me and said, "No we’ve never been through something like this." So then I said well have you received any sort of training, to which she answered, "No, nothing like this."
There is a group of 15 to 20 school teachers that work day in and day out with the students. They pour their lives out for this community and they have not had one enrichment training offered to them since they have been employed there. I take for granted the school system that I have in the United States. It’s not perfect, but a free education is pretty darn important when you realize that so many people all of the over the world don’t get that type of benefit. I look at my job as a full-time educator. I’ve just now entered into the school system and I’ve already received numerous trainings from my school and from the district. I take for granted the enrichment activities that my school provides for me. They are intentional in helping us become better teachers and better people.
I am so thankful that I got to bring a similar opportunity to this school and their staff. We focused on strategic communication strategies between the teaching team. We looked at conflict communication and useful strategies to create harmony. And most importantly, we had a little fun.
I can’t wait to come back and follow up with this school. I hope this is a start to a long lasting relationship.
